Seekae have been around since 2006 and I hadn’t had the chance to see them live. Not until Friday that is. An impressive live show boasting live drums, guitars, samplers and synthesizers was what I was told to expect.
With ‘every sound and song meticulously planned and executed’, the talk around their brand of electronica is consistently on the rise.
Around 11pm on Friday night I walked into a transformed Woodland for the sold out ‘+Dome’ show. Happy hour at the bar ended just as the support act played their last few tracks.
Dom from Brisbane band Oh Ye Denver Birds played the interval DJ set, and everyone else waited patiently for the headlining three-piece from Sydney to unpack all their synths, drum kits and guitars.
Bubbles floated down from the ceiling and disco lights danced across the walls. Seekae finally got everything up and running, and embarked on a 75-minute journey of atmospheric, layer-building bliss.
Things started off slowly, with long and droney synth chords shaping the atmosphere for the first two tracks, but before long live drumming, ambient and murky samples as well as ethereal vocals were thrown in.
The highs and lows experienced in this set made me giddy, just like a rollercoaster would. Band members George, John and Alex have apparently collected the material for this second, full-length album over a period of two years, which they spent performing and touring.
They were stoked the show had sold out and rightly, told the crowd so. Seekae will soon take the songs from ‘+Dome’ as well as their back catalogue of tracks to the UK for The Great Escape Festival. Very exciting times for them.
